Does song overlap signal aggressiveness? An experimental study with repeated measures in free-ranging great tits

چکیده
Vocal communication is often used to signal willingness escalate into a physical fight during territorial conflicts. In songbirds, starting sing when an opponent already sings (song overlapping) has been suggested aggressive intent (willingness escalate). We multiyear data set test whether song overlapping predicts aggressiveness in great tits, Parus major. Territorial males were subjected twice simulated intrusion their mate was the egg-laying phase, and she incubating. Males presented with taxidermic mount noninteractive playback of conspecific near nestbox. The experiment conducted over 3 consecutive years, resulting repeated measures for that bred across multiple years. estimated minimum approach distance intruder, repeatable heritable trait likelihood attack, as measure aggression. determined duration by focal male relative values expected chance. Against expectations, we found birds overlapped less (rather than more) aggressive. addition, variance partitioning demonstrated this link resulted from within-individual effect: became one observation next, they also more. There no among-individual individuals on average more did not, average, overlap either or others. Our results thus imply linked aggression but opposite not among individuals. Furthermore, majority at below chance levels. Overall, may rather ‘nonengagement’, result interference avoidance, allowing residents better hear intruder's acoustic output intrusions.

Personality and Information Gathering in Free-Ranging Great Tits
One aspect of animal personality that has been well described in captivity, but received only little attention in studies in the wild, is that personality types may vary in their behavioural flexibility towards environmental changes. A fundamental factor underlying such differences is believed to be the degree to which individual behavior is guided by environmental stimuli. We tested this hypot...
متن کاملSong Trait Similarity in Great Tits Varies with Social Structure
For many animals, long-range signalling is essential to maintain contact with conspecifics. In territorial species, individuals often have to balance signalling towards unfamiliar potential competitors (to solely broadcast territory ownership) with signalling towards familiar immediate neighbours (to also maintain so-called "dear enemy" relations). Hence, to understand how signals evolve due to...
متن کاملPersonality predicts spatial responses to food manipulations in free-ranging great tits (Parus major).
Personality differences measured under standardized lab-conditions are assumed to reflect differences in the way individuals cope with spatio-temporal changes in their natural environment, but few studies have examined how these are expressed in the field. We tested whether exploratory behaviour in a novel environment predicts how free-living individual great tits (Parus major) react to a chang...

متن کاملEffects of urban noise on song and response behaviour in great tits.
Acoustic communication is fundamental in avian territory defence and mate attraction. In urban environments where sound transmissions are more likely to be masked by low-frequency anthropogenic noise, acoustic adaptations may be advantageous. However, minor modifications to a signal could affect its efficacy. While recent research has shown that there is divergence between songs from noisy and ...
